5 5 Kia Sportage Review
The Sportage’s acceptability precedes it – but can it alive up to abundant expectations over the advance of a accurate several months of ownership?
It’s fair to say I had aerial expectations for my latest long-termer, the 2021 Kia Sportage, afore I alike got abaft the wheel.
Kia’s acceptability for accepting an absorbing seven-year warranty, an added absolute name recognition, affordable pricing, beginning architecture and absolute packaging precedes it.
Plus, aback I was a teenager, my parents bought a 2011 Sportage afterwards adversity through the amaranthine buying costs of a European car (name withheld), and they still babble about its economical ammunition consumption, practicality, believability and affordable aliment costs.
To this day, they are baffled that pre-paid account advantage for the Sportage for 72 months amount the aforementioned as a distinct appointment to the account centre in their antecedent car.
The affair is, though, that ‘affordable’ is a abstract appellation and abounding bodies – myself included – ability baulk at the angle of advantageous added than $40,000 for a Kia.
I’ll accept that I still accredit a ‘budget-friendly’ affection to Kia, so I was absolutely afraid to apprentice the all-wheel drive, petrol-powered GT-Line alternative I’m testing actuality bliss off from $45,290 additional on-road costs, but is $50,900 drive-away aback you agency in the $520 ‘cherry black’ acrylic option.
That ability assume high, but accede my parents paid aloof over $40,000 drive-away for their top-spec Sportage aback in 2011, acceptation it’s risen by beneath than $10,000 in nine years.
That’s about in band with aggrandizement (the RBA’s calculator estimates that it should amount $47,545 in 2019 based on CPI), and isn’t too abandoned aback you accede that safety, disciplinarian abetment and infotainment technology has bigger in that time, acceptation you’re now accepting added car for your spend.
That’s comparing a new Kia to an old Kia, however, so how does the Sportage’s amount hypothesis book aback put up adjoin its key competitors?
Those arcade for a Sportage accept acceptable advised one, if not all, of the afterward medium-sized, mass-market SUVs: the Hyundai Tucson, the Honda CR-V, the Mazda CX-5, the Nissan X-Trail, the Mitsubishi Outlander or the Toyota RAV4.
For a commensurable petrol-powered, top-spec, all-wheel-drive adaptation of all of those, the cheapest you’re activity to get is the Outlander at $43,990, the average of the ambit is the Tucson at $46,850, and the best big-ticket advantage is the CX-5 at $50,830 (all of those prices are afore on-road costs).
Based on that, the Sportage is absolutely the additional best affordable advantage of its competitors, provided you can do after the blooming atramentous acrylic (unfortunately, bright white is the alone no-cost option).
It’s additionally abstinent to baby in admeasurement compared to the blow of its class, alms a 466L cossack that is outdone by the Tucson, CR-V, RAV4, X-Trail and Outlander – but manages to action added allowance than the CX-5.
Measuring 4485mm long, it’s additionally one of the few average SUVs beneath the 4.5m mark. Alone hardly best than the Tucson, but beneath than the blow of its key competitors – which could prove accessible for owners with urban-centric lifestyles.
The long-termer blueprint we accept in the CarAdvice barn is the GT-Line, which is powered by a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol agent commutual to a six-speed automated chiral alive all four wheels.
